Required documents for vehicle registration in Louisiana

  • A duly completed bill of sale 

  • The odometer disclosure statement for vehicles under 16,000 pounds and that were manufactured within the last 20 years 

  • The certificate of title that has been signed over to the buyer 

  • A duly completed vehicle application (Form DPSMV 1799);

  • The form for notice of vehicle transfer 

  • A driver’s license that’s valid in the state of Louisiana

  • The applicable registration fees 

  • Proof of insurance that meets the mandatory minimums 

  • If the vehicle is to be registered on behalf of the owner by someone else then a motor vehicle power of attorney is required

  • A duly completed bill of sale 

  • A duly filled application for boat registration and motor title (Form 55)

  • If it was purchased from a dealership, the manufacturer’s statement of origin is required

  • Boat registration tax payment certification 

  • A certificate of title that has been signed over by the seller 

  • If the vessel is constructed by someone that’s not a licensed manufacturer then an affidavit for boat inspection is required 

  • A driver’s license or identity proof 

  • The applicable fees
